Cushing's syndrome. Light micrograph of a section through a human adrenal (suprarenal) gland tumour, causing Cushing's syndrome. The tumour is a benign (non-cancerous) adenoma (adenomatosis). It causes the adrenal gland to overproduce corticosteroid hormones, which leads to Cushing's syndrome. The adenomatosis causes the tumour to grow (hyperplasia, far left). Small irregular shaped cells with large, multiple nuclei (pink) are seen at far right. Symptoms of Cushing's syndrome include a moon-faced appearance and excess body & facial hair (especially in women). Treatment requires removal of the adrenal gland, followed by hormone replacement drugs. Magnification unknown | |
