Chilblains. Chilblains on the toes of a 56-year- old female patient on beta blockers. Chilblains are itchy red swellings caused by excessive constriction of the small blood vessels below the skin's surface. Here, the middle toe is most affected, being red and swollen in the area behind the nail. The chilblains in this patient were a side effect of taking beta blockers. Beta blockers are drugs used to treat heart disorders. They reduce heart rate and air flow to the lungs and can reduce blood flow to the limbs, resulting in disorders such as chilblains. Chilblains are normally caused by the cold and mostly affect the fingers and toes of children and the elderly | |
