Cirrhosis. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of a human liver cell (brown),known as hepatocyte,affected by cirrhosis. It is a disease in which fibrous tissue breaks up the structure of the liver,severely impairing its functions. The cirrhosis damaged here the smooth membrane that normally surrounds the bile canaliculi (green) triggering a condition known as intra-hepatic cholestasis. The bile flows out of the canaliculi and enters the venous sinusoids (bottom & top right),the blood vessels surrounding each hepatocyte. The usual symptom of cholestasis is jaundice.
