Mastectomy scar. Close-up of the scar left by a mastectomy to prevent breast cancer from spreading. Removal of a whole breast,as here,is a radical procedure. The partial removal of a section of the affected breast is more common. However,if the cancer is large and well established, the entire breast and all underlying tissue can be removed. If the cancer is discovered early, the treatment has a high success rate. The mastectomy is followed with a course of anti-cancer drugs and radiotherapy to prevent reoccurrence. Breast cancer is one of the most common causes of death in women. Self-examination of the breasts can often give an early diagnosis | |
