| Breast cancer cells. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through carcinoma cancer cells in a female breast. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. The large majority of carcinomas of the breast are invasive ductal carcinomas of cells that line the milk ducts. Here,each cancer cell has a large nucleus (orange) surrounded by green cytoplasm. Abnormally large nuclei indicate rapid cell division. Inside one cell is an intracytoplasmic crypt (red). These cells undergo chaotic growth and multiplication and unless destroyed early,the cancer may spread around the body with fatal results. Magnification: x2,800 at 5x7cm size | |
