Bronchiectasis. Coloured bronchogram (X-ray) of a human lung showing bronchiectasis. Bronchiectasis is a lung disorder in which the bronchi and bronchioles (airways of the lungs, red) are permanently dilated and distorted. In this case, some of the bronchi have terminal bulbous enlargements,a condition known as fusiform bronchiectasis. Bronchiectasis is most often acquired during childhood following chest infections such as measles,TB,pneumonia and whooping cough. This damages the lung tissue, making it more susceptible to infections later on in life. A bronchogram is obtained by performing a chest X-ray after injection of a contrast medium | |
