Bronchitis. Coloured bronchography (X-ray) of swollen bronchioles (orange) in the right lung. Bronchitis causes the network of airways in the lungs to become swollen and produce mucus. This can cause difficulty breathing and a productive cough. Other symptoms include fever and chest pain. Acute (short-term) bronchitis is generally caused by a viral infection and usually heals within 10 days. Chronic (long-term) bronchitis is most often seen in smokers, but may also be caused by air pollution. Chronic bronchitis is often an indication of more serious underlying respiratory disease. Bronchography uses a contrast medium to show the airways | |
