Bursitis. Subacromial bursitis causing swelling of the shoulder in an 88-year-old woman. The swelling (at centre) has been caused by inflammation (bursitis) of the subacromial bursa of the shoulder joint, resulting in pain. Bursae are fluid-filled sacs located in the connective tissue of joints. They cushion pressure points in the body, for example where a tendon crosses a bone. Treatment involves resting the affected area until the swelling subsides. Painkillers and local anaesthetics are often needed. In chronic cases surgery may be necessary | |
