Hairy leukoplakia & oral candidiasis (thrush) affecting the tongue of a man with AIDS. The leukoplakia appears as a white, ribbed ulcer along the edge of the tongue. Hairy leukoplakia is believed to be due to an increase in the population of the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV),possibly in association with the papilloma virus. It usually produces no symptoms, but in persons with ARC (AIDS-related complex - a precursive stage to full-blown AIDS) is often indicative of the onset of AIDS. Oral candidiasis, which appears as white patches on tongue & in mouth is almost universal in cases of AIDS | |
