MODEL RELEASED. Alopecia. Bald spot on the scalp of a 7-year-old girl due to alopecia areata. Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease, the body's immune system attacks the hair follicles, halting hair growth. However, the stem cells that supply new cells to the follicle are not affected,so the follicles always have the potential to regrow hair and in most cases do. Alopecia areata can occur at any age in either sex. It often occurs for the first time when the patient is under the age of 20. It can affect just the scalp,or the whole body. There is no treatment, although corticosteroid drugs can sometimes be used to stimulate new growth | |
