Hepatitis B virus. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of hepatitis B viruses and their naturally occurring antigens. The larger spheres (Dane particles) are the complete virus. Hepatitis B viruses occur typically in clusters of 3 types of particles: the virus itself, with smaller spheres and rod-shaped forms made from the protein coat of the virus. The smaller non-infectious spheres are antigenically identical to the virus, and provide raw material for hepatitis B vaccines. Infection by hepatitis B can be sexually trans- mitted, and may cause chronic hepatitis. Negatively stained. Magnification unknown | |
