False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of Hepatitis A virus particles. Hepatitis A is a small RNA-containing virus 25-28 nanometres in diameter. It has similar structural features to the Picornavirus group of small RNA viruses (which includes enterovirus & rhinovirus). Hepatitis A is the causative agent of what was formerly known as infective hepatitis. Transmission occurs through the faecal-oral route; flies, food & drinking water are the vectors. The disease is more prevalent in warm countries with poor standards of hygiene. Magnification: x60,000 at 35mm,x135,000 at 6x7cm size | |
