Ebola virus particles, coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM). This elongated virus belongs to the Ebolavirus genus,a group of viruses which cause Ebola haemorrhagic fever. Each particle has an ribonucleic acid (RNA) genome, within a nucleocapsid (blue). The capsid is surrounded by a envelope (green) covered in glycoprotein spikes. A number of major outbreaks of Ebola infections have occurred in equatorial Africa since 1976,causing severe and frequently fatal symptoms. These include high fever, haemorrhaging and central nervous system damage. There is no absolute cure for the disease, but with excellent supportive therapy, around three-quarters of victims recover.
