Yellow fever virus particles. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of yellow fever virus particles (virions, green). Several of the virions are surrounded by their envelope (brown),derived from the host cell membrane. This helps to prevent the host's immune system from recognising the virions as foreign. Yellow fever is a flavivirus, transmitted to humans by infected female mosquitoes. It causes yellowing of the skin (jaundice),fever, headache and nausea. In serious cases there may be liver and kidney damage,or even death. Vaccination can provide immunity. Magnification unknown | |
