It is endemic in tropical Africa and Central and South America, and is transmitted to humans by infected female Aedes aegypti mosquitoes when they bite. It causes yellowing of the skin (jaundice),as well as fever, headache and nausea. In serious cases there may be liver and kidney damage,or even death. Vaccination can provide immunity.
