AIDS. False-colour scanning electron micrographs showing changes in the appearance of cultured T- lymphocytes following infection with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV),the causative agent of AIDS. At top is a normal uninfected T-cell,the surface of which forms long irregular microvilli. At bottom is a T-cell infected with HIV; the microvilli are lost and replaced by rounded features. Small spherical budding virus particles are visible on the cell surface. Depletion of the population of T4 lymphocytes through HIV infection is the main reason for the destruction of the immune system in AIDS. Magnification: x1410 at 35mm size
