Nanotechnology. Target in which microscopic holes may be 'drilled' by a transmission electron microscope. The electron beam of the modified microscope is focused onto the surface of the target and can create a hole just 2 nanometres (billionths of a metre) wide. This means that the contents of all 29 volumes of the Encyclopaedia Britannica could be engraved onto the tiny target seen here. The target is 50 nanometres thick, and is made of aluminium fluoride. This technology could have applications in nanometre-scale electronics, molecular sieves and micro-robotics,It was developed at the Department of Materials Science,University of Cambridge | |
