19th century microscope. View of a Zent Mayer light microscope, dated 1876. The instrument was largely made of brass. It contained two lenses of different focal lengths mounted in a rotating holder (lower centre),giving the microscope two magnifications. At above centre is the monocular tube with eyepiece which could be moved up and down to focus. The specimen was placed on a glass slide on the specimen stage, and illuminated by a mirror (at bottom) that reflected light from a light source | |
