Cloister of Nevile Court, part of Trinity College Cambridge. This 63-metre long cloister was used by Isaac Newton in experiments to determine the speed of sound in air. Newton (1642-1727) had calculated the speed of sound in his masterwork,"Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica". He then attempted to prove his theory by timing the echoes of a hand clap along the cloister. Although notoriously sharp of hearing,it is doubtful that he could have achieved the required accuracy - the sound wave would take only 0.37 second for the round trip. His predicted speed was about 10% too slow,as he had not taken into account the heating of the air as the sound wave passed | |
