Reverend Thomas William Webb (1807-1885),British astronomer. Webb was the son of clergyman,and was himself ordained as a curate in 1829,following a mathematical education at Oxford. He lived and worked in Gloucestershire and then the parish of Hardwick near Wales. He is most famous for Celestial Objects for Common Telescopes (1859),but wrote several other books and articles on popular astronomy. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1852. Webb is shown here with his wife,Mrs Webb (Henrietta Montague),whom he married in 1843. She died in September 1884,and the heart-broken Thomas followed her eight months later in May 1885 | |
