Booker Taliaferro Washington (1856-1915),US teacher and politician. Washington was born a slave in Virginia,and freed at the age of nine. From the age of sixteen,he trained as a teacher. In 1881 became the leader of the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama,a school founded to educate former slaves,and remained in this position for the rest of his life. His activities in politics included his famous Atlanta Address of 1895 (also called the Atlanta Compromise),where he successfully called on white businesses to employ African-Americans,rather than the immigrant population.
