Daniel Hale Williams (1856-1931),African-American surgeon. Williams graduated from Chicago Medical School in 1883 and started work as a surgeon. In 1891 he founded Provident Hospital and Training School Association in Chicago,America's first interracial hospital and training school for black nurses. It was at Provident,in 1893,that Williams performed the first open heart surgery,when he removed a knife from the heart of a stabbing victim. The patient recovered and went on to live for several years.
