William Withering (1741-1799),British physician. Withering graduated at the University of Edinburgh and as a keen botanist he made careful studies regarding medicinal uses of several herbs. In his book An Account of the Foxglove (1785),he suggested that some cases of oedema (abnormal accumulation of fluid in the body tissues) could be treated using foxglove leaf extract.
