Portrait of Sir Almroth Wright (1861-1947),British bacteriologist and developer of the anti- typhoid vaccine. Wright was educated at Trinity College,Dublin,where he obtained his bachelor degree in medicine in 1883. After further study in England,Europe and Australia he was appointed to an army medical school. There he was to develop the first vaccine against typhoid fever,the scourge of troops entrenched on a battlefield. In 1902 he moved to St.Mary's Hospital in London where he remained as professor of pathology. He taught many gifted and famous pupils (including Alexander Fleming),and was knighted in 1906 | |
