James Tuck,British physicist,at a dance at the Los Alamos laboratory in New Mexico in September 1945. Tuck was a member of the British Mission to the US Manhattan Project, and contributed to the design of the first atomic bombs. Tuck's main work was in designing the explosive lenses used to compress the plutonium core of the first atom bomb (tested at Trinity on 16 July 1945) and the bomb dropped on Nagasaki. Plutonium (and some uranium) in the core were compressed by shaped explosive charges to form a critical mass. Tuck returned to the UK in 1947,but went back to Los Alamos as a US citizen in 1950 | |
