Andrew Taylor Still (1828-1917),American founder of osteopathy,holding a femur (thigh bone). Still had some medical training from his father and from Kansas City College. Still practised medicine from 1849 and served as a surgeon during the American Civil War. In 1874 he announced that bone and joint disorders,infectious diseases and degenerative conditions could be cured by manipulation and massage of muscles,joints and bones. He named this new technique osteopathy. In 1892 he founded a medical school,and in 1894 a medical osteopathy journal.
