Leland Stanford. Portrait of the American businessman and philanthropist Leland Stanford (1824-1893). Stanford is best known for founding Stanford University in 1893 in memory of his son,Leland Jr. Stanford was an extremely successful railway magnate and was partly responsible for the building of the Central Pacific Railroad. He also served as governor of California (1861-1863). In 1872,he commissioned the photographer Muybridge to resolve an argument about a horse's gait.
