Mary Scharlieb. Coloured engraving of Dame Mary Scharlieb (1845-1930),one of the first two women to graduate in medicine in England. She graduated in 1883 from the London School of Medicine for Women at London University with first class honours,a gold medal and a scholarship in obstetrics. During her early married life in India she had seen the suffering of women who,due to their religion,could not be treated by male doctors. She started her medical training in Madras,India. By 1885,Scharlieb ran a hospital in Madras and taught at the city's university. Returning to Britain she was in charge of surgical beds at the New Hospital for Women | |
