Ackroyd Stuart. Portrait of Herbert Ackroyd Stuart (1864-1927),British inventor of an oil internal combustion engine. Working at his father's steel- works,Stuart patented new oil vaporisers, scavenging systems and speed control in 1890. He filed two more patents in 1890 for an oil engine which used compression-ignition in conjunction with a hot vaporiser. In 1891,R. Hornsby & Sons bought Stuart's patents, improved his design and began manufacture in 1892. The Hornsby-Ackroyd engines were highly successful, particularly for agricultural uses. They were superseded by Rudolf Diesel's designs. Stuart ordered the destruction of all of his own technical papers when he died | |
