Scott of the Antarctic. British explorer Robert Scott (1868-1912),whose ambition to be the first man to reach the South Pole ended in failure and tragedy. Scott joined the navy in 1881. In 1900 he commanded an expedition to explore the Ross Sea area of Antarctica. In 1910 he returned, this time on a quest for the South Pole. His team reached the pole on 17 January 1912,only to discover that the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had beaten them by a month. On the return journey Scott and his companions died in a blizzard just a few miles from base camp. Their frozen bodies were found by a search party 8 months later, and Scott's tragic diary, found with him,was published in 1913 | |
