Abdus Salam (b.1926),Pakistani physicist and Nobel Laureate. Salam's early career drifted between Lahore, the Punjab University and Cambridge. Salam's main work was in the theory relating to the unification of the electromagnetic and weak nuclear forces. For this work he shared the 1979 Nobel Prize for Physics. Predictions of the theory include the existence of neutral currents and the W and Z intermediate vector bosons, all of which have since been discovered experimentally. Salam is a leading figure in the promotion of theoretical physics in the developing world. Photographed at CERN,Geneva,in 1979 | |
