Martin Raff,Professor of Biology at University College,London. Raff is one of the world's experts on apoptosis, the genetically-programmed tendency of cells to die even if healthy. His interest in cell death stems from research into brain cells in the 1980s. Raff discovered that single cells in culture die from apoptosis within hours. He later proposed that apoptosis is the normal state for a cell, and it is prevented from dying only by the influence of chemicals such as cytokines and growth factors secreted by neighbouring cells. Raff has even offered a prize of #1000 to anyone who finds a cell capable of living in isolation. Photographed in 1994 | |
