Pliny the Elder (23-79 AD),Roman naturalist and author (at right),shown with the Roman Emperor Vespasian (9-79 AD),seated at left. Pliny wrote the 37-volume encyclopaedia Historia Naturalis. The work was based on two thousand books by nearly five hundred authors and covered zoology,botany,geography and astronomy. Pliny dedicated it to Vespasian's son Titus.
