Priestley's apparatus. Engraving of the laboratory of the English gas chemist Joseph Priestley (1733- 1804),showing various pieces of experimental apparatus. Most of these are troughs and bell jars with which he would isolate and store gases. Priestley pioneered the technique of collected gas over mercury rather than water, which allowed him to obtain samples of gases which dissolve in water. Priestley discovered ten gases including oxygen, hydrogen chloride, nitrous oxide and sulphur dioxide. He also investigated their properties. His work is contained in the three- volume Experiments and Observations on Different Kinds of Air published in London in 1774-7 | |
