John Oxford. Portrait of John Oxford, virologist and researcher into the "Spanish influenza" outbreak of 1918. Oxford is a Professor in the Department of Medical Microbiology,St Bartholomew's Hospital,London. He is holding lung specimens taken from victims of the 1918 influenza epidemic in which about 20 million people died. Using molecular biology,Oxford hopes to find the cause of such epidemics; 31 have happened since the 16th century. Isolating any influenza virus genetic material from clinical samples will show whether the virus structure was responsible for the epidemic. It may also show a link to Parkinson's disease.
