Norris Bradbury, left, and Robert J. Oppenheimer (1904-1967) at Los Alamos,New Mexico,in May 1964. The Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory was set up under Oppenheimer in 1943 to develop the atomic bomb. After the Second World War there were many who felt that the laboratory should push onward with research into the hydrogen bomb,to consolidate the lead held by the U.S. in terms of nuclear weaponry,a task which Oppenheimer felt distinctly uneasy about. Bradbury had no such qualms however and hence succeeded to the directorship of the laboratory,a role he played until 1970 | |
