Percy Alexander MacMahon (1854-1929),British mathematician. MacMahon's initial career was as a soldier in India,but after he was wounded he trained as a mathematician instead. He was President of the London Mathematical Society from 1894 to 1896. He is best known for his study of symmetric functions and the enumeration of plane partitions. He was not himself an astronomer,but served in administrative functions for the Royal Astronomical Society,including being President from 1917-1918. His awards included the Royal Society's Royal Medal (1900) and Sylvester Medal (1919) | |
