George Perkins Marsh (1801-1882),American environmentalist, diplomat and philologist. Marsh practiced law in his home state of Vermont,USA,before entering politics. He devoted his spare time to philology and was fluent in numerous European languages, including Scandinavian. In 1864 his book Man and Nature was published, which detailed the often harmful impact of man on the environment. It challenged the widely accepted view of human supremacy on the Earth. He also prescribed solutions, such as using birds and insects to control pests, and thus became known by many as the father of environmentalism. Photographed between 1855 and 1865 | |
