Kelly Miller (1863-1939),US mathematician and sociologist. Miller studied at Howard University,Washington DC,one of the institutions pioneering education of African-Americans in general,and former slaves and their children in particular. Miller went on to study at Maryland's Johns Hopkins University,the first African-American to do so. He became professor of mathematics at Howard University in 1890,but he also developed his interest in sociology,becoming professor in that subject from 1895-1934. He was also a prolific writer,with a weekly newspaper column. He also wrote on his views on African-American education policies. Photographed published circa 1917 | |
