Mary Mantell. Portrait of Mary Ann Mantell,British palaeontologist. Born Mary Ann Woodhouse, she married the geologist Gideon Algernon Mantell. In 1822 Mary Mantell discovered the remains of a dinosaur at Tilgate Forest in the Cretaceous rocks of the English Weald. It was named Iguanodon because its teeth resembled those of the modern iguana lizard. She drew the 42 plates in her husband's book Fossils of the South Downs (1822). Unfortunately for Mary, her husband was a fossil collecting fanatic. She was eventually forced from their house by his fossil collection which had become a popular local attraction before it was finally sold to the British Museum in 1838 | |
