Cesar Milstein. Portrait of Argentinian-British molecular biologist and Nobel Laureate,Cesar Milstein (born 1927). Born in Argentina,Milstein spent his early career at Buenos Aires. In 1963 he took up a post with the Medical Research Council in Cambridge,England. His work on immunoglobulin led to his discovery of monoclonal antibodies (MCA). MCAs are produced by injecting an antigen into an animal, then later removing antibody-rich B-lymphocytes from the spleen. These are then fused with malignant cells,to result in an immortal cell line capable of producing large quantities of pure antibody. Milstein shared the 1984 Nobel Prize in Physiology for this work | |
