Engraving of Guglielmo Marconi (1874-1937),Italian physicist & inventor of the radio. Tutored privately in his youth,he later entered formal education at the Technical Institute of Livorno. At 21 Marconi developed his first radio equipment,with a range of about 1.5km. The British government became interested in radio,and in 1899 Marconi made a transmission across the English Channel. Two years later Marconi made his first trans-Atlantic transmission,and in 1909 he won the Nobel Prize for Physics.
