American chemist Dr Stanley Miller, born 1930. A graduate of California and Chicago,Miller worked at California University from 1960. His most familiar work was done when he was a research student with Urey in 1953. In his experiments,Miller attempted to study the origins of life by duplicating the conditions which would have existed on the primordial Earth. His apparatus contained a "sea" of purified, sterile water under an "atmosphere" of hydrogen, methane and ammonia. Incandescent electrodes imitate lightning and ultraviolet radiation from the Sun. After a week or so the result was a tar-like residue containing amino acids, the basic building blocks of life | |
