Leon Lederman. Portrait of Leon Max Lederman (1922 -),American physicist. Lederman studied muons,a type of subatomic particle. In 1962 he led a team which found that two types of neutrino particles were produced when a muon decayed. This provided evidence that fundamental particles are split into distinct generations. In 1977 he led a team which discovered the upsilon particle, the first particle found to contain the bottom quark. He also discovered the long-lived kaon particle. He was director of the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab) during 1979-89. Lederman shared the 1988 Nobel Prize for Physics. Photographed in 1994 | |
