Joseph Locke. Portrait of Joseph Locke (1805-60),British engineer and railway pioneer. Locke worked for George Stevenson and with Robert Stephenson to construct the world's first railway between Liverpool and Manchester. In 1835 Locke built the Grand Junction Railway, introducing double-headed rails attached to wooden logs. With slight modifications, this became the standard railway track design. Locke went on to build many of the early main line routes in Britain,France,Spain and Holland. He was noted for finishing them close to the estimated time and cost. Locke's lines were noted for their straightness, avoiding the use of tunnels & bridges but often having steep gradients | |
