Auguste (left) and Louis Lumiere,French pioneers of cinematography. Auguste (1862-1954) and brother Louis (1864-1948) were the first cinematographers to screen popular motion pictures. They combined technical expertise (such as Edison's perforated film and claw movement) with great artistic flair to produce a number of stunning works. On 13 February 1895 they obtained a patent for their "cinematographe",a combined camera and projector that operated at 16 frames a second. The first public showing was in Paris on 28 December of the same year. The film, which showed a train entering La Ciotat station, was taken from such an angle that the audience gasped with terror | |
