Jay Keasling,US synthetic biology scientist. Keasling is Professor of Chemical Engineering and Bioengineering at the University of California,Berkeley (UC Berkeley),USA. He is also the Director of the Physical Biosciences Division at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the founder of the Synthetic Biology Department at UC Berkeley. Synthetic biology is a form of genetic engineering that attempts to design novel biological functions and systems using an engineering approach. Cells can be designed from scratch in the same manner as electronic circuits. Keasling and his colleagues are using synthetic biology in plants to produce new drugs and on micro-organisms to produce high yields of oils which can be converted to biofuels.
