Professor James Kasting. Portrait of professor James Kasting, climatologist,on an artwork of the surface of Mars. Professor Kasting studies the evolution and chemistry of planetary atmospheres at the University of Michigan,USA. This includes work on the differences between Earth and its two neighbours Mars and Venus. Venus is the hottest planet in the solar system, while Mars is cold, but shows signs that liquid water once flowed on its surface. He has theorised that Mars was once warmed by a greenhouse effect caused by methane-producing bacteria on the planet. Photographed in 1997 | |
