Rudolf Jaenisch (born 1942),German geneticist. He qualified as a medical doctor in 1967 and started a career in medical research, working in both the USA and Germany. He pioneered transgenic research that used mouse models of human diseases, instead of cell cultures. These methods are used to tackle a wide range of genetic disorders. Recent research by Jaenisch involves the role played in cancer by methylation. This is a process that controls gene expression; a methylated gene is 'switched off'. This research could lead to new methods of cancer therapy. Jaenisch and his colleagues also work on cloning. Since 1984 he has been a professor at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology),USA | |
