Camille Jordan,Portrait of Marie-Ennemond Camille Jordan (1838-1922),French mathematician. Working on mathematics in his spare time,Jordan made major contributions to group theory. Jordan absorbed the ideas of Galois, and developed a rigorous theory of finite and infinite groups. He used permutation groups to help solve polynomial equations. He advanced symmetrical groups and reduced linear differential equations to a group theoretic problem. He also generalised Hermite's work on the theory of quadratic forms with integral coefficients. His influential publications include Traite des Substitutions (1870) and Cours d'analyse (1890s) | |
